Can you explain what makes the GICEC a unique exhibition centre in Foshan and the PRD?

The GICEC is Foshan’s first purpose-built conference and exhibition center. In order to meet the growing demands of Foshan’s manufacturing industry, it became necessary to develop a venue capable of accommodating heavy machinery. In addition to the exhibition venue is a world-class conference center designed to meet the needs of Asia’s evolving meetings industry. One of GICEC’s key advantages is it’s collaboration with Germany’s Deutsche Messe. By aligning our organization with an industry leader we are able to extend our reach on a global scale.

What are the plans for GICEC in the future, what sort of exhibitions are you looking to host?

Future developments, to be completed in 2018, include an additional 50 000 m² of exhibition space, a four star hotel as well as a cultural and commercial precinct. Foshan is an industry leader famous for the manufacturing of machinery, metal processing and intelligent manufacturing. The GICEC will serve as a platform to promote trade and industry in the Pearl River Delta as well as greater China. In an effort to continue developing a cultural hub in Foshan’s new city, we plan on hosting sporting and live-music events.

How the cooperation between Deutsche Messe and the Foshan Local Government for the Centre started?

In order to attract and nurture industrial technological services, the Sino-German Industrial Service Zone was established in Foshan as a high-end international co-operation zone for all of Guangdong’s industries. The  Zone  now plays a leading role in country-level co-operation between China and Germany and has a particular focus on developing Foshan’s high-end technology services as a means of facilitating and strengthening co-operation with its European partner’s high-tech sector. Deutsche Messe owns and operates one of the world’s largest venues and have over 70 years of experience in the industry.

Finally, can you tell us a bit more about your background and what do you think about Foshan?

I began my career in the meetings and events industry in May 1997 where I opened the Durban International Convention Centre in South Africa.. Through extensive travel abroad attending industry conferences, I developed a world-wide network and gained invaluable knowledge of the market. I was approached by Deutche Messe to head up the GICEC and subsequently opened the Center in September 2016.

Foshan’s ecological environment, cultural and lifestyle hub and excellent transportation system make it a very livable city.
